BENEFITING: PRAYERS FROM MARIA FOUNDATION
ORGANIZER: PRAYERS FROM MARIA FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 27, 2013
My last Marathon was Boston 2010. That was a race that I qualified for, then trained for, and finished because running friends said that should be a goal. I'm blessed with fitness at this time in my life, and so checked that off my list. My friend, Ken Grohe seen in the middle of our finish picture was able to run Boston through a charity for which he raised a significant amount of money. What a better reason to run... to give back, to pay forward...
My first Marathon was just after college when a wrestling teammate and I finished our eligibility, looked at each other, and asked "now what do we do". My 2nd marathon came when I turned 40 and wanted to prove something. Before Boston, I had talked about running the Marine Corps for my 50th, and talked a colleague, Jen Kurtz into running it with me for her 30th. As teachers at Harmon Middle School in Aurora, we take our 8th graders to Washington D.C. each October the 3 days prior to Marine Corps Marathon weekend, and had always seen the set up preparations in progress around the Marine Corps War Memorial next to Arlington National Cemetery. We thought that this year we might be able to send the busses home and stay.
At an Aurora Sports Booster's fund raiser this Spring, another friend who runs, Curtis Posner and I began talking about the race when he suggested that I run it with Prayers From Maria to help raise funds to fight Cancer- to run for something more. He told me of the courage of his friend Rich Figler who is featured in the video, as well as of Maria and all the children who are most vulnerable to the Glioma form of cancer. We spent the evening talking. He recruited me for a great cause that he is passionate about and that I am learning about.
Cancer has challenged and/or taken a great number of my family, friends, colleagues and students. All have fought back with courage while continuing to put others before themselves. All have grown in faith and cherished life. All are an inspiration. Me? I can put my talents where my prayers are. I can run.
After running her first 5K this 4th of July my daughter asked me, "Why do people pay to run?" Now I have a better answer- to help others. I hope you will support my run this October with a small contribution to the Prayers for Maria Organization through this website. Prayers From Maria is proud to be a charity partner of the 2013 Marine Corps Marathon. Our team members are raising funds that will go directly to children's glioma brain tumor research.
Thousands of children are diagnosed with cancer each year. One-third of those children are diagnosed with brain tumors, and nearly half of those brain tumors are gliomas. Over 97% of children with the worst of the gliomas, diffuse pontine gliomas, die within three years. We cannot ignore this shocking statistic, and we hope that you won’t either. We need your help.
The Prayers from Maria Foundation is dedicated to funding global research into the causes, prevention, treatments, and cure for the deadliest childhood brain tumors known as gliomas; raising public awareness about gliomas and bringing hope to children and their families who deal with the hardships of this disease.
Please support our team by making a donation today!
No federal or Marine Corps endorsement is implied.
