The McNary Bergeron - Kraemer Team will be golfing at the first Bridges & Birdies Golf Tournament to help raise $50,000 for a Bridges to Prosperity bridge that will serve several hundred people in a remote community in Rwanda.

The Rulindo Bridge will be located in one of the Rulindo District's river valleys that is home to a tea plantation, timber harvesting operations, and subsistence farmers. The treacherous Nyaborango River had plagued residents of the Cyungo and Cyohoha Cells for years. The narrow river seems innocuous at first glance, but a large catchment basin, steep declivity along the valley, and a deep channel make it very dangerous when heavy rains hit. Because the crossing is so important, residents have erected a small log bridge across the span, which they have to replace nearly every year. Given the local timber harvesting, it is difficult to find trunks of substantial size to cross the chasm.

The community struggles when they can’t get their produce to the market just down the road in the Rwamahwa Cell. By constructing a sustainable bridge at this location, local farmers would be able to get their produce to market year-round. Just as importantly, the 1,500 children that live in the Cyohoha and Marembo Cells on the far side of the river would have access to the secondary school in the Rwamahwa Cell. Additionally, while the Rwamahwa Cell has a thriving market, it lacks a health post that the Cyohoha and Marembo Cells both have. A bridge will cut nearly 4km off the distance that residents must carry their sick family members to the Health Post.

Give today, and help us meet our team goal of $5,000 to help make this bridge a reality!
