Hello friends and family,
It's that time of year again. You'd think it'd be the same every year, but each time Spring comes around, I'm in a new place in my life. The last 6 years have seen me through so much! Strangely, I'm grounded by running and training for the same race every year...the Boston Marathon.
This fall I did the Toronto Marathon. It was a great race, but being in Canada, it was laid out by the metric system - all 42.2 kilometers! I was nervous about running past 42 kilometer markers. Thats a lot of flags! So Sarah and I devised a plan - let's dedicate each 5k to a different person who is special to our lives. We ran for Justine, Henry, Sarah's grandfather, family members, patients, anyone we could think of who was going through a tough time in life. If they could press on, so could we!
I dedicated the final 10k, the last 6 miles...to my friend Alyssa. As many of you may remember, I ran in her honor last year. She battled leukemia with an unparalleled grace. Every step was in honor of her; a tiny tribute to the massive battle that she fought so bravely, and so calmly. I only had the pleasure of knowing her once her chemotherapy was over and she was successfully in remission. We never knew she was sick until she bravely shared her story in class one day and encourage us to ask questions which she answered honestly and without judgement. She continues to be my inspiration to this day.
Please join me in honoring those people in our lives, like Alyssa. Sadly, we are all touched at some point in our lives by someone who has battled cancer. Donating to the MassGeneral Pediatric Oncology/Hematology Clinic directly supports clinical and laboratory research as well as supportive care programs including wellness services like art and music therapy; parent, teen and sibilng support groups; and child life specialists who help patients cope with illness and treatment.
I can't succeed in this race alone. I need your help to reach my fundraising goal of $5,000. I am counting on the support of my family and friends to not only finish the race, but also to help fight childhood cancer. Please consider donating in honor of a family member, friend, or loved one. Include their name in the donation, and like Alyssa's final 6 miles, I'll dedicate a mile or two in their honor.
Keep on running!
