EVENT DATE: Jun 05, 2012
Hello wonderful people who have stumbled on my page,
The short story is: I'm going to provide access to clean drinking water for 700-1000 people this summer!
The long story: I am thrilled to have received an amazing fellowship position in Ghana with a small non-profit called Community Water Solutions (CWS). For half of the Ghanian population, the only drinking water available comes from stagnant, bacteria-laden surface sources like ponds and streams, leading to thousands of preventable deaths each year from waterborne diseases. Because there aren't enough non-saline groundwater sources in Northern Ghana to effectively drill wells, CWS builds a water purification system and trains the village women how to treat the water using locally available materials. The women then sell that water to members of their village at an affordable price and use that money to sustain the business.
Because having clean water is such a huge source of both health and pride, the villages have responded enthusiastically to the business model and the fee is small enough that it is not preventative for anyone. It also allows the women who work there to make a small profit-- which some have used to send their children to school, the first in their families to attend primary school!
CWS fundraises the capital for the equipment to build these water treatment centers and trains the women to run them, but afterwards the businesses are completely run by the community; CWS just visits to check up on the business and ensure that things are running smoothly. The result is both a sustainable source of clean drinking water and empowerment of the village women! To date, we have successfully implemented our water treatment businesses in 35 communities in Ghana, providing reliable sources of clean water to over 22,000 people.
I will be working with CWS in June to install a new water treatment system and business in a village in Northern Ghana. As a member of the Summer Fellowship program, I am responsible for raising part of the capital necessary to establish the business-- my share totaling $3000. All funds raised are going directly toward the materials for the business I and three other fellows will be implementing.

I am out of my mind excited to experience Ghana firsthand and strongly believe in the mission and methods of CWS. Clean water makes such an incredible difference in both the health and dignity of a people. $3000 is a lot to fundraise, but I really believe in the cause and would greatly appreciate any contribution, no matter how small! Just think-- if 300 of you would be willing to give up 2 Starbucks drinks (about $10 if you're fancy with yours) I will have reached my goal.
This website does charge a small fee for its maintenance, so if you'd prefer to have that out of the picture you can send checks to Community Water Solutions, 46 Ledgetree Rd, Medfield, MA 02052 with my name in the "memo" portion.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the project-- I would love to tell you more about it! Thank you so much for your support!!
