THE STORY:

Northwest Indiana Meals On Wheels Inc wrote -

A niece recently wrote to us –

Meals on Wheels is such a blessing to our family.  By her choice, our 95 year old aunt lives on her own.  We live in a different state so our care-giving is limited.  Last year, we decided to purchase Meals on Wheels for her.  She looks forward to it every day.  She enjoys the nutritional food but she also enjoys the brief conversations with the deliverers.  We have the security of knowing that each day someone is checking on her as well as providing her with a meals that she doesn’t have to prepare herself.  The program is often a popular topic of our phone conversations.  She brags about what a delicious meal she just ate.  And she shares about her conversations with the delivery people.  We are so thankful for this wonderful service and the kind people who implement the program.

This letter paints a picture in your mind of a loving family that cares a great deal for their aunt.   This aunt likely cared for and supported her nieces and nephews so lovingly that they in turn want to ensure she is able to stay in her own home where she feels safe and is surrounded by good memories.  Because of donors like you, Meals on Wheels provides peace of mind to this family; they know she is safe and nourished.  Maybe you can picture your own family in a similar situation.

Now, take Meals on Wheels out of the picture.  What so you see?  An lonely, aging woman eating a can of soup?  Are the newspapers or mail piled up outside because she has had no one to bring them in?  What if she falls in the middle of the night?

Yes, Meals on Wheels provides a positive, nutritional change in the lives of our homebound senior clients.  More importantly though, Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal.  We preserve the dignity and independence of our seniors.  We are the warm, compassionate smile of a volunteer performing a wellness check.  We are the service that keeps families feeling secure in the knowledge that their elderly loves ones are well taken care of.

Our mission:

The mission of Meals on Wheels of Northwest Indiana is to deliver nutritious meals to those in need with the support of community volunteers.

What will your gift do?

Currently, we need support in helping our seniors who struggle to pay for their meals.  Our Meal Subsidy Program was created to provide assistance to seniors who struggle to pay for their meals.  This is an ongoing, long-term need.  Every year, our goal is to raise approximately $100,000 to help offset the cost of meals for those who need assistance.  A gift of $250 will provide 49 meals, a gift of $500 will provide 98 meals, and a gift of $1,000 will provide 196 meals.
