BENEFITING: FRIENDS OF IKAMVA LABANTU
EVENT DATE: Jul 18, 2015
For over 50 years, Ikamva Labantu (www.ikamva.org) has partnered with South Africa's most impovershed townships in community development. Ikamva has uplifted, empowered and changed lives of over one million South Africans during this time...and over 7 years ago, it changed ONE more: that of a privilieged, but lost, 21 year old American girl---- me. A lot has happened since then, but I have never strayed far from Ikamva or South Africa. Then, this January, I was given the opportunity to start Ikamva's first official US office and I did so with great pride and responsibility.
Now I am asking you to join me - as we not only invest in the incredible work of Ikamva Labantu by supporting the nearly 2,000 Orphans and Vulnerable Children in our program -- but do it all to celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela. The man, the 'Tata' (father) whose spirit and example inspires us all.
This is our #Meals4Mandela campaign that I created in honor of International Nelson Mandela Day (July 18th, 2015)-- to raise at least enough money ($10,222) to provide our orphans and vulnerable children 10,222 meals - one for each day Madiba spent in prison to fight for the South Africa we have today --- one where all of our children can and will flourish. But not without our support!!
Our children -like ALL children- need education, oppurtunity, skills, love, support and enrichment. Ikamva Labantu provides all of that. But none of our work can be successful if our children are not given the FUEL they need to grow. Orphans and vulnerable children in South Africa's townships face abject poverty and critical food insecurity. It's a challenging reality, but there is PLENTY of hope to go around. For $1 per meal, YOU can provide these children with the nutritional food they need, including fresh produce from our community food gardens.
As you know, I am asking for your support in lieu of ANY birthday gifts this year, so give whatever you can and share with your friends. I can't tell you how much it will mean to me....and even more so, to the children of Ikamva.
I have told our Founder and my personal hero and mentor, Helen Lieberman (if you don't know her story, I suggest you google it)-- that Ikamva and South Africa have given me so much -- my purpose, my career, a new home, a re-birth, life-long friends and family, and things too personal or complicated to explain....that I know I can never give back as much as I have received -- but I am committed to using the rest of my life and my work to trying....and I hope you'll help me.
Fuel the legacy that inspires us while fueling our future generation to grow strong. #Meals4Mandela
