The Meals on Wheels Walkathon raises much needed awareness and funds for SJCS Meals on
Wheels. We rely on individuals like you to help us Step Up! Stop Hunger! By raising awareness and
money through the Walkathon, you will be helping to provide nutritious food and vital safety checks
to our homebound neighbors in need.
OUR COMMUNITY RELIES ON PEOPLE LIKE YOU!
SJCS provides an average of 1,450 meals each day to individuals in need. Last winter, 31% of our
Meals on Wheels recipients reported that they do not always have enough money to buy the
additional food they need beyond Meals on Wheels. But because of Meals on Wheels and the
nutritious food and vital safety checks that are provided, 69% of individuals reported that they can
continue living in their own home.
• 76% report that they eat a healthier variety of foods
• 42% believe their health has improved and feel better
• 56% are less hungry during the day
• 72% feel safer knowing someone is checking on them
By raising money for the Meals on Wheels Walkathon, you are providing more than a meal to
individuals in need in our community: you are providing comfort, peace of mind, and empowerment.
SET A GOAL TO RAISE $500!
The money you raise will provide nutritious food, vital safety checks, and a friendly smile to someone
like Catherine, who is 82 years old and shared this with us:
“I had a hard time walking and had difficulty cooking my own meals. I am happy to see these caring
people come to my door. The meals are very tasty and the people are friendly…this made my life
Your fundraising efforts will improve the lives of people like Catherine, and reaching out to friends
and family to raise funds is a great way to spread a message of compassion.
IT’S EASY TO BE SUCCESSFUL!
Raising money for Meals on Wheels is easy! Here are a few tips to get started.
• Set a fundraising goal! How much do you want to raise for Meals on Wheels, and what are a
few steps you can take to get there?
• Email all of your contacts! Ask each for $20 to support your efforts. Tell them why providing
food and safety checks to homebound individuals in your community is important to you.
• Ask everyone! Many people have some sort of connection to Meals on Wheels. A neighbor
or friend may have received it, a family member may have volunteered, or maybe they
volunteered. You may be surprised to find that for many people, Meals on Wheels has had a
presence at some point in their lives.
HOW TO RAISE FUNDS
It’s easy to be successful at fundraising! Follow these simple guidelines to raise even more money
for Meals on Wheels!
Plan. Decide what your fundraising goal will be before asking for donations. Select deadlines for yourself. Keep track of who you ask and when so you are able to send individual reminders.
Remember that many people have some sort of connection to Meals on Wheels. Share some of the
statistics about why Meals on Wheels is important to the individuals who receive it. If it has had an
impact in your life, share that story. Don’t be afraid to show your passion – your friends and family
will care if you care.
Each email should include a brief explanation of what SJCS Meals on Wheels does, what the
Walkathon will accomplish, and why you are choosing to participate. Highlight your fundraising goal
and how much you would like individuals to give. Here’s a good way to start: “Hi! I’m asking my
friends to give $10 to help provide Meals on Wheels to people like Catherine!” Provide Catherine’s
quote (see above) or a story about an individual (see People of SJCS), and include a link to your
personal giving page at www.MealsOnWheelsWalkathon.com.
Using Facebook and Twitter, post your goal and why you’re walking. Ask your friends to donate
$10 through your personal giving page. Share some statistics from SJCS Meals on Wheels or
stories from People of SJCS to teach your friends about the individuals their donations are helping. Be sure to include a link to your personal giving page in all of your posts!
After donations have been collected, remember to thank your donors via email, in person, or with
a hand-written “thank you” note. Emphasize how their support contributed to your effort to reach your
fundraising goal and communicate how much money was raised overall to help provide food and friendly smiles to your neighbors in need.
Outreach Sponsor yourself for $25
Ask three family members for $25
Ask five friends to donate $15
Ask five co-workers to sponsor you for $10
Email 15 contacts and ask for a $10 donation
Ask your company for a $75 contribution
Ask two businesses you frequent for $25
Need some more ideas?
• Set up a change bucket on your desk at work. Make it bright, fun, and noticeable.
• Hold a dinner for 10 friends (instead of going out to eat) and ask for a donation of $10 each.
• Hold a team or community garage sale.
• Hold a 50/50 raffle for your family, friends and coworkers. Donate half of the proceeds to the
Walkathon, and the raffle winner gets the other half!
• Canvas your neighbors and ask them to support you in the walkathon. You’ll be raising
money AND preparing for the walk!
• Get a family member to pledge a donation by making it a fun challenge on Facebook.
Example: “Uncle Henry has pledged to donate $5 to the Meals on Wheels Walkathon, up to
$500, for every “like” that this status gets, so please like and share!”
Don’t forget to thank all of your donors for their support!

Step Up! Stop Hunger!
Join us on Saturday, May 19th as we walk to raise funds and awareness for Meals on Wheels.
Each week day, SJCS provides an average of 1,450 meals to our older and disabled adult neighbors. The food and safety checks we provide help these individuals to remain in their own home and be independent, healthy, and connected to their community.
Your support helps SJCS provide nutritious food and essential safety checks to this frail population, giving them and their loved ones peace of mind that someone is checking on them and that they have a healthy meal to count on.
Join us today!
P.S. If you'd rather make a cash or check donation, please write "Walkathon" in the memo line or with a note and send it to:
