MEARCSTAPA Graduate Student Essay Prize
Organized by: Asa Mittman
MEARCSTAPA (Monsters: the Experimental Association for the Research of Cryptozoology through Scholarly Theory And Practical Application) is raising funds to offset the costs of attending the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo (2017) for a graduate student! The writer of the best essay for one of our Kalamazoo panels this year will receive $500 in funding for their travel expenses. In the acronymic tradition of MEARCSTAPA, we unofficially dub this prized the BEASTY (Best Essay Authored by a Student This Year). Since our founding a decade ago, we have sought to foster graduate students and early career researchers working on monsters and the monstrous. We do not collect dues from members, so we have no funds to materially support these good scholars. We therefore turn to YOU for help! Any funds raised above and beyond this amount will go to similar graduate student prizes for Kalamazoo 2017 or another conference: MEARCSTAPA regularly hosts panels at MAP (Medieval Association of the Pacific), SEMA (Southeast Medieval Association), the International Medieval Congress at Leeds, and other national and international conferences.
[For the uninitiated: MEARCSTAPA is a group of medievalists — scholars who study the Middle Ages. We are historians, literature specialists, art historians, archeologists, anthropologists, and so on. We have in our membership deans and department chairs, tenured professors, tenure track faculty, adjunct (part-time, temporary) faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars. “Kalamazoo” is what we call the International Congress on Medieval Studies, our annual conference, held in Kalamazoo, MI, every May. We welcome you in our Facebook group, and at any of our conference sessions, should you be in town!]
