EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
As a Boston College Lynch School of Education alumni, I feel there is no better day in the entire year than Marathon Monday. It is exciting, inspiring, chaotic, and mesmerizing. You can feel the adrenaline in the air and see it on each runner, family member, and stranger's face.
On April 15th, 2013, the best day of the year drastically changed. Like many, I remember every single detail of being so close to the attack. Cell phones were down, bomb threats were on campus, the magnitude of the situation slowly set in. I can remember exactly the what food was given to us during the lock down though I tasted none of it. I still can the feel of the stillness in the air as the Boston College Police Department allowed me and five friends to drive my car out of the city. I still get chills at the vibrations of helicopters, remembering the constant sounds of their blades cutting through the air.
What I remember most clearly and vividly is one year later, standing back at mile 21. The feeling of adrenaline, the sounds of pure joy as fans cheered on their friends, and the sight of strength had all returned with an inexplicable ferocity.
It is for that reason I hope to be a part of the MEB Foundation Marathon team. I hope to raise money towards individual strength, towards perseverance, and towards happiness.
As someone with both a Bachelor's and Master's in elementary education, I know how important it is to encourage children to stay diligent in school. As a child life specialist, I see how important health is as well. As someone who was so close to losing it all, I know the strength that Boston can bring to our youth. All require empowerment and drive. As part of the team, I hope my efforts go towards this empowerment and education, ultimately helping children feel the same strength that Boston is capable of sharing.
Below is just a little more about the incredible Meb Foundation!
