Africa Medical Volunteer Project

Ever since I was a little girl, all I have ever wanted was to help other people. That never changed, even after fifteen years. I recently graduated from Colorado State University with a bachelor's degree in food science and human nutrition and I am looking forward to doing my master's degree in physician assistant (PA) studies.

When I was 18 years old, I was diagnosed with lymphoid hyperplasia and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). Lymphoid hyperplasia is a rare condition creating a few to several hundred tumor-like lesions that are usually benign. I have about 250 lesions in my intestines. CVID is a genetic immune disease limiting my ability to fight bacteria (bubble-boy syndrome). Luckily, through my supportive family, friends and many doctors, I am being treated with life-saving plasma infusions.

But, unlike myself, there are thousands, if not millions of children, women and men who do not have the luxury of receiving the medical care they need. I want to help provide these people with healthcare while also gaining some valuable experience for PA school as well as life. In the summer of 2012 I will be joining a group called Elective Africa to make this dream come true. I plan on staying for 4-6 weeks starting in early June to help see and treat patients and hopefully scrub in on surgeries.

Unfortunately, between being a new graduate and my own medical bills, I do not have enough funds to make this happen on my own. If my friends, family and anyone else out there could help me make this happen, I can help to make a difference in the lives of others through your kindness and support. I know many people are struggling with money as well, but every penny matters. Even if you only have $5.00 to spare, I will be more grateful than you know.

Thanks for your support,
