Medical bills and supporting my family
Organized by: Teira Millham
Where do I start? My name is chris Matthews, I have 3 children under the age of 9, amazing children. I have a wife who battles cancerous lesions on her cervix, every month is something different and a struggle and then there is me.... I was a framer and roofer, loved it actually. My last job was a repairman for a large roofing company in Regina, SK. I truly enjoyed my job.... in December 2014, I fell off a roof I was doing a repair on, it was a 10ft high roof. I landed straight on my feet causing to fracture them and jolted my back pretty good... I filed with workers compensation, but I couldn't get any health coverage as I'm from alberta. So I made the best choice I thought would help my family, I went back to alberta to get in to see a doctor and get the proper pain medication. Workers compensation finally came through but they requested physio. I had to do a few months of physio in Alberta before I could come back to my family.... I started getting shooting pains from my left leg to my back, causing myself to collapse a few times feeling paralyzed, in the end workers comp accepted my back as well as my feet. I finally was able to over home but had to continue to do physio for 5 days a week. I was diagnosed with ptsd (post traumatic stress disorder) do to my fall, at times I will be sitting on my couch and will have a flash back of falling which gets my anxiety going. I was recommended to get counseling for this but wcb didn't see the point.... my doctor has informed me that I will never be able to climb up onto a roof again, so I won't be able to ever roof again... physio then tells wcb that I can go back to work although I couldn't get past the 4th step on a ladder or lift 65lbs (usual weight of a bundle of shingles) so with that wcb has now suspended my payments (although they've been told I can never go back on a roof) they even stopped funding my pain medication, which is determwntal for me to have to even be able to get out of bed.... I have now been fighting for my compensation back with an advocate. But was told the other day that it is still being reviewed, so no early then 45 days I will get their decision. So as of now, I am out of money for my pain meds and at this point I can't even feed my family. We do get food bank but that's only a few days worth of food. We have 2 meals left to cook and on the verge of being evicted work nowhere else to go. I don't know what to do anymore. This is my last resort, I am asking for some help thank you.
