Megha and I are currently finishing up our first year of medical school! Before we begin our second year as student doctors, we are excited to embark on a medical mission this summer in rural Peru!
Trujillo is name of the colonial town that we will call home for 4 weeks. The clinic we are volunteering at is a self-funded non-profit facility that focuses on caring for those with limited resources. It has a specific focus on maternity and pediatrics. The staff consists of 40 community doctors and nurses all working on reduced rates.
Each day at the clinic we will work closely with local physicians obtaining patient histories, performing physical exams, and simple surgical procedures. Certain days are spent with community nurses making home visits to patients who are unable to travel the distance to the clinic. During the 4 weeks, we will live with a local Peruvian family and learn medical Spanish in our free time.
The cost of participating in this program is $2,440 per volunteer. It may seem odd to some that we have to pay a fee in order to volunteer, but a large portion goes to helping the clinic afford simple supplies such as scalpels, gowns, alcohol wipes, etc. that they cannot afford to provide for their patients. It is not unusual for these patients to purchase their own medical supplies at a local store prior to their clinic visit. Medical Spanish classes are also included in the fee. We are enthusiastic about this aspect of the program because we believe that learning the medical side of this valuable language will help us to better serve patients abroad and in the US.
We already have some of the funds, compiled from both school loans and saved up from past jobs. Your donation will go toward covering the remaining cost of the program, transportation, and meals. At the completion of the program, we will send you a breakdown of exactly where your donation was used!
IF MORE THAN THE GOAL AMOUNT IS RAISED, we will use those excess funds to either:
1.) provide a health campaign
2.) donate medical supplies and toys to the children's center at the clinic
We are so happy to be spending the summer volunteering at this amazing clinic and cannot thank you enough for taking the time to visit our fundraising page! If you would like to donate, or just leave some words of encouragement, it would be greatly appreciated! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. :D Let's change the world together.
Much love, Sam & Megha
