BENEFITING: TIMMY GLOBAL HEALTH
EVENT DATE: Jun 02, 2013
My name is Kristine Baula, and I’m a first year student at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. I have been selected to travel to Tena, Ecuador as part of a medical brigade for two weeks in early June 2013. Specifically, sixteen other 1st year medical students and myself at the University of Louisville are working with Quito Eterno and the Timmy Foundation, non-profit organizations focused on providing medical humanitarian aid to the people of Ecuador. Our group will include sixteen students, up to 6 physicians, and two pharmacists. We will be working in rural clinics in the Amazon specifically aimed at providing crucial medical care and aid to the indigenous communities surrounding Tena. Last year’s group was able to see over 800 patients in 2 weeks!
The sixteen students going on this trip are responsible for raising the funds to purchase the medical supplies needed to serve the needs of the people of Ecuador. The estimated cost of these supplies is approximately $3000. In addition, we are also responsible for providing funding to cover surgical referrals for those patients we see in clinic who are in need of surgical interventions. The people of this rural community are often unable to obtain care they desperately need, as they cannot afford the cost of the procedure and travel arrangements. However, the cost of healthcare in Ecuador is actually quite low by our standards, with many surgical procedures falling in the range of 25-100 U.S. dollars. The funds that we raise will directly pay these costs for the individuals that come to the clinic in need of surgical services – but we can only refer as many patients as the money we raise will allow. So every little bit helps!
Any monetary donations will specifically cover the cost of supplies, medications, and surgical referrals and WILL NOT go towards individual participant costs (including students and physicians/pharmacists travel fees).
Please help make this trip a success by making a donation. We greatly appreciate your investment in the people of Tena, Ecuador. Thank you for your time and consideration.
