BENEFITING: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
EVENT DATE: Oct 16, 2011
Most of you never met my mother. Her name was Brenda. She was epic. An East coast beauty, with a big heart hidden behind a tough as nails attitude. She was a single parent who showed me what love and loyalty looks like. She instilled the importance of work ethic and dedication. She taught me to have courage and conviction and how to smell bullshit a mile away.
You would have liked her.
My mom was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in 2003. She passed away 5 months later, on February 10, 2004. She was only 61.
She will miss my wedding. She will miss my divorce. She will miss my second wedding. I like to think that she will visit those events in spirit, but it’s just not the same.
On a whim, I entered the lottery for the Nike Women’s Marathon, and I was picked. Since this is a race to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, I like to think mom had something to do with it. She was always fascinated by my love for running, but also I think she’d get a kick out of me suffering for 26.2 miles in her honor.
I will be running The Nike women’s Marathon on October 16th, 2011, ten days before my mother’s birthday on October 26th. She would have been 68… I think. I’m terrible at math.
I will be running in her honor, and I would like to raise money in her honor.
I have no quota. I am not training with a fundraising team. This is merely a gesture.
A tax deductible gesture. A hello, and a happy birthday to Brenda.
After you donate, give yourself a pat on the back, accept my deepest thanks, then go hug your mother.
