Meeting our Greek Grandma for the first time
Organized by: Jim Pappas
EVENT DATE Apr 19, 2016
My name is Brandi Pappas and I live in Brownsburg, Indiana. I married my husband Jim in October of 2008. We had our first child, Zoe in July of 2009 and our second child , Zak, in 2010. I have an 11 year old daughter, Jaycee from a previous marriage. I have lived in Indiana my entire life, but my husband is from Athens, Greece. So here is where our story begins....When our son Zak was born, we discovered he was born with a genetic syndrome called Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome. This syndrome significantly increases his risk of childhood cancer. The screening protocol for this syndrome sent our family into a financial tailspin with uninsured medical bills. We had to make the decision for me to quit my full time job, to obtain income based insurance to help cover the expenses of his quarterly screenings. So for the 7 years my husband and I have been married, we have only ever been able to send him 2 times back home to see his family. Myself and our 2 children have never met their Greek Yia Yia. She has had to watch her grandchildren grow up through pictures, and the occasional Skype ( on a computer in someone elses home). She has never kissed or given them a hug. When they speak on the phone to her, she spends most of her phone time with them crying because she longs to touch their faces. We have made many attempts to get her to come to the United States, but her fear of flying has set that option back. She is 75 years old, and honestly, we don't know how much time she has left as her health continues to deteroriate. We would love to be able to save the money to go, but it would take us 4 to 5 years to save the money for airline tickets alone. Our wish, is for us to fly to Greece so that our kids will get to meet her, and for her dream to come true. .. to wrap her arms around the grand-babies, whom she's never met.
