It's hard to believe that on September 21, 2013 that Alex will nearly be 20 months old and much closer to 2 than 1! We will never forget that life changing day when doctors told us "there are multiple complications with your baby." On that day we were unsure of his diagnosis, we were unsure of his survival, we were unsure of what challenges were ahead of us,unsure of what Down syndrome "really" was, unsure of just how strong our partnership and marraige really were and above all unaware of how much love a little boy by the name of Alex would bring to our world. What a journey it has been.
This year we have been blessed to be home with our sweet boy. This year we haven't had to sit in doctors offices and discuss statistics on his survival rates. We haven't had to hear the words "only 50% of children with this liver issue survive." We haven't had to sit diliegently by his hospital bed for weeks on end as his body fought off complications like pulmonary hypertension and wait for blasts of platelets to resolve. That's not to say we've had a year free from the medical world. Alex had his share of colds as well as his hand at landing us in the hospital a few times. He had stage 1surgery of 2 for hypospadius repair. This kept us hospital bound for 5 days. And we had a handful of fainting episodes which have led to more tests like an EEG, ultrasounds, metabolic testing and more - only to prove that everything looks fine and not provided answers for why his little body goes limp every couple of months.
Two years ago when we found out our son would have Down syndrome, we had no idea how strong he would be. We knew he would be our warrior and he proves worthy of his name each time he faces a challenge. He faces these battles with a smile on his face and positivity like no other. It doesn't take long before he is making us laugh at something and winning the hearts of nurses and doctors everywhere.
He has the most fun discovering his world and this year Alex has grown into a smart little boy that has his list of favorite things. He loves to swim and make big splashes during bath time. We think he might be part fish. He loves all types of music and will dance all day if we let him. He loves to play ball (just like his daddy) and is proving to be quite the basketball player. He gets his love of books from his mommy and wants books read throughout the day. He points at pictures and words and has a continuous sense of curiosity. Nothing brings a smile to his face like bubbles and balloons.
He is reaching milestones at his own pace and teaching us everyday that he has his own schedule that can't be rushed. He might not be crawling or eating "people" food yet but he is communicating with us and uses his 35+signs to tell us what he wants...sometimes demanding. He uses his favorite word "up" each morning to wake us promptly at 6:00 AM- everyday. He works weekly with his team of therapists to maximize his potentional and we are blessed to have an amazing group of women who love him and challenge him to the next goal.
Alex is destined for great things. He teaches those around him about acceptance. He challenges his principal of a mommy to rethink educational techniques. He shows us patience and the importance of high expectations. He is a constant reminder of what is truly important in this world. He teaches those who love him the definition of unconditinal love.
Alex is supported by a team of great people - we call these people "The A Team." This team includes his family, his friends, his therapists, his doctors and his nurses. We can't wait to celebrate Alex and his A team on September 21st. We walk in celebration of Alex. We walk in honor of everything that makes him unique and special.
We hope you can join our A Team on September 21st at Baker Park in Frederick Maryland. We promise it's going to be a great day of fun filled activities. We personally hope to raise $2000.00. This money will be used for education and acceptance campaigns for individuals similar to our son.
