I can still remember my 1st Back on My Feet run with Team Vets. January 2012. 5:30am. 4ish miles. Cold and snowing. The conversations and running down the snowy tree lined streets of Comm. Ave are still so clear to me. The route we rant that day is still one of my favorites and at that point in the morning it was less about the running and more about who I was with, the peace and the tranquility. To this day it is still one of the best ways to start the day off right and that’s what Back on My Feet is all about.
For 2 ½ years I woke up Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to run with Team Vets. I joined as a non-residential member and never did I think the organization would have had the impact that it did on me. During this time I evolved from a non-res member to Team Coach and Team Leader. Three days a week I looked forward to having conversations with residential members about how their week was going, job hunting, Boston Housing, school, their children and families, or running with someone who for the first time ran 3 miles without stopping. After each run I left feeling inspired and touched by what they’d shared and their determination to move on to the next chapter in their lives.
Just as running in a group brings a sense of belonging and motivation to the res and non-res members of Team Vets, running over the years has helped me start each day energized with a clear head. Running has been a part of my life since 2007. Initially running helped me to de-stress and overcome challenges that life throws at you. Now it’s just a way of life – whether I run alone or with a group. I know that if I run I’m going to feel better than if I didn’t and that to me is reason enough to lace up my shoes and go.
This year I’m taking my involvement with Back on My Feet to the next level by running with Team Running Home in the Boston Marathon. Having your support would mean so much to me. In fact your support will not only carry me 26.2 miles, but will help the Residential members of Back on My Feet with housing, obtaining, job training, education and more.
