THE STORY:

Hi everyone,

I'm running in this year's Vancouver Rock & Roll Half-Marathon as part of Team Volken on Oct 25, 2015 at 8:15am.  In the last few years I've really gotten into running and running in support of things I love and care about.  I'm really excited to be apart of this event.  It was a milestone for me when I accomplished my time last year and I hope to beat it with a goal of 2:00 hours!

The team I'm a part of is a charity devoted to helping those in recovery from addiction, as well as, supporting kids in Africa.  If you'd like to join the team and support either charity, please come out and join me on Team Volken.  You can run or walk in either the Saturday 10km or  Sunday 1/2 marathon.  If runnings not your thing, but you'd like to show your support, please donate to my page and still come out to cheer us on and enjoy the post-race concert at Stanley Park!  Any donation, small or big, is helpful!

John Volken Foundation

The John Volken Foundation was established in 2001 by United Furniture Warehouse owner John Volken. In 2004, John sold United Furniture Warehouse and transferred virtually all of his assents in the foundation and devoted his efforts full-time to the Foundation’s charitable programs Lift the Children and the John Volken Academy. John’s humanitarian endeavors reach 7 countries. In 2014, John was honored with the Dalai Lama Humanitarian Award for Changing Lives.

John Volken Academy

The John Volken Academy is a long-term residential drug and alcohol treatment center for young men and women aged 18-34 that goes far beyond other treatment centers. Our residents overcome their addictions, as well as further their education, receive extensive career training, and gain all the tools they need for a happy and successful life of sobriety. There are currently three academies in Vancouver, Canada, Phoenix, Arizona and Seattle, Washington. The program’s affordability is at the heart of its purpose. Other than a relatively small one-time admittance fee, the entire costs of the 2-year+ program is paid for by the John Volken Foundation. This includes the students’ housing, food, job training, education, counseling, and more. Our mission is to be a world leader in providing the most effective and most affordable addiction recovery treatment teaching relevant life and job skills, instilling in each of our students the desire to always be the best that they can be for themselves, for their families, and for their community. Visit www.volken.org for more inforamatoin about the John Volken Academy.

Lift The Children

Lift The Children is a non-profit organization dedicated to seeking out the world’s most destitute children and providing them with the necessities, training, and inspiration they need to develop, grow and become self-sufficient. We work in some of the poorest slums in the world to provide aide directly to orphanages caring for their children. 100% of all donations go directly to the orphanages as the John Volken Foundation covers all administrative expenses. Lift The Children is inclusive of all faiths, cultures and nationalities and is committed to feeding, educating and lifting children out of poverty. We are helping support over 10,000 children in more than 80 orphanages.

Lift the Children also implements long-term self-sustainability programs with the goal of educating the poor out of poverty by teaching generations how to increase food production. The backbone of this strategy is based on the agricultural science of permaculture, which mimics natural eco systems to produce more food using fewer resources. Learn more by visiting www.liftthechildren.org.

100% of all funds raised by Team Volken will directly support the John Volken Academy and Lift the Children.

You're going to kick some ass out there Meghan!! Two hours is ambitious but you're one of the strongest people I know. I am confident you'll achieve your goal. My Sunday shift is very difficult to get rid of so I probably won't be able to make it out to cheer you on . I send my best wishes :) 2 years ago
