Mercy was raised in a loving family with her father and mother. However, when Mercy was 10, her father left her mother for another woman. Mercy’s mother struggled to raise Mercy as a single mother, wishing the best for her daughter. Her mother works at a hotel in Nairobi. Through a scholarship, Mercy was sent to a private elementary school 8 hours from home. Mercy’s mother knew this was the best option for Mercy as she knew that she would rarely be home, and Mercy would receive better care there.
In Mercy’s interview, the Daraja Academy administrators asked her to name a woman she admired and why. She readily replied, “Michelle.” The Administrator asked “Michelle who?” Mercy replied with all the attitude she could muster, “Michelle Obama! She told all of us to love each other when the election violence happened.”
Mercy is a happy and smiling girl at Daraja Academy. She is one of the first to raise her hand in class. She loves to joke with her fellow students and teachers. She smiles openly, until a camera is pulled out and then she gets very shy, covering her beautiful smile with a hand and turning away. However, she is always one of the first to want to see her picture on the digital camera after it is has been taken.
