BENEFITING: MELANOMA EDUCATION FOUNDATION INC
ORGANIZER: MELANOMA EDUCATION FOUNDATION INC
I am so excited to run the NYC Marathon on November 5th this year in honor of my Dad and the Melanoma Education Foundation. I will be running with a Team of three other runners from the Melanoma Education Foundation.
Eight months ago my Dad began having unexplained seizures. He went through many hospital visits and neurological exams until a tumor was finally discovered on the Parietal Lobe of his brain. Mass General Hospital ended up diagnosing my Dad with Stage IV Melanoma which had metastasized to his brain. For many late stage Melanoma patients it is too late when it spreads to major organs and inoperable areas. My Dad was lucky enough to have the tumor removed and he is being treated with Immunotherapy which is continuing to shrink his tumors and hopefully he will be cancer free over the next six months.
Many patients of all ages are not this lucky. In fact, Melanoma can be much more aggressive in younger patients which was another driving force for me to choose the Melanoma Education Foundation as my charity of choice. The family that founded this wonderful organization lost their 24 year old son Dan Fine in 1996 to Melanoma. You can read Dan's story at www.skincheck.org as well as educate yourself about Melanoma and the importance of annual skin checks with a Dermatologist, warning signs, photos and lesson plans for schools to educate students about Melanoma. The more we educate ourselves the more we can prevent this deadly disease.
Thank you so much in advance. Any support is truly appreciated.
