Ting Huie Diaz wrote -My family have been members of St. John's Lutheran Church and School (Go Eagles!) for almost 15 years. Our kids Alex and Emily have grown up in this wonderful, close knit community since kindergarten. When you get to know St. Johns students, you get to know their families and we have all become one big family! Alex and Emily have known their classmate Myranda and her sister Melinda for many years - they were known as the gymnasts, for their love and passion of all things gymnastics. Recently, Melinda was diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), a very rare muscle disease that affects only 3 in 1 million children each year. There is no known cause and no known cure. Melinda has become unable to perform gymnastics, and can barely walk up a flight of stairs. Walking is something everyone does without thinking, yet for JDM sufferers, they no longer take for granted. I have witnessed her family and in particular, her mom, Sharon spend every minute day and night caring for her, taking her to doctor visits, chemo and steroid treatments, traveling around the country for specialized treatments and fighting for more funding to find a cure. Despite all the pain and obstacles Melinda has been through, each time I see her, she is always upbeat. This is a strong family! As I see what Melinda and her family go through every day, as a mom myself, I was compelled to try and help. They need a cure, and they need funding to help all kids who suffer from this disease.
