49 days to go!
August 21, 2016
BENEFITING: Jack H Marston II Melanoma Fund
EVENT DATE: Oct 09, 2016
Friends and Family,
I have gone insane and have decided to run the Chicago Marathon this year!
As many of you know, our family lost our grandpa too soon and too fast to melanoma. My grandpa, Bob Schnelten, was always there for me. He fully supported everything I did in life--decisions on college, boys, vet school, etc--and he was even the one who walked me down the aisle at my wedding. I often think of all the wonderful things that have happened over the past 8 years that he had to miss out on. I think of all the times I have needed his advice and have just had to imagine what his opinion would have been. He loved life and loved his family even more.
Through running, I have discovered a part of myself I never knew existed. I have done more physically and mentally than I ever thought possible. I am putting myself through this challenge to honor my grandpa and to fundraise for research and programming so that one day, melanoma will be 100% treatable. With my own children and family members at risk, it becomes even more important.
Join us in support of an incredible group of athletes who have chosen to make their marathon experience more meaningful by raising funds to fight the deadly disease melanoma. We invite you to help them reach their goals and join the fight.
Our Vision: "We envision a world where every adult and child is aware of the risks of melanoma and takes preventative measures; where those who suffer from melanoma receive comfort and healing; and ultimately, where every case of melanoma will be completely curable."
2016 Goal: Raise $100,000 for melanoma research and awareness programs.
- Melanoma is the most underfunded of all cancers by federal and private agencies.
- Early detection makes melanoma highly curable, but it is the least screened cancer.
- People find their own melanoma more frequently than doctors do and melanoma detection is not a training requirement for most medical disciplines.
Jack’s Team: Established in 2005 when a group of athletes came together to join the fight against melanoma. Jack's Fund has been an official marathon charity for 12 years and disbursed over $300,000 to research. We invite athletes of varied experience from all stages of life to join Jack’s Team.
Our success stems from a unique - SPF - Strength, Passion and Focus each member brings to the team.
