Melissa's House Is Thrilled To Be An Official 2013 Cap City Half Marathon Charity
On the east side of Columbus, Ohio sits an old brick Italianite structure. It's on a tree-lined street, not far from parks, schools, the library and shopping. This spring the house will become a home as renovations begin. Once completed, Melissa's House will provide a permanent, safe haven for adults living with mental illness. Melissa's House will offer its residents and their families a safe, comforting, inviting environment where they can regain hope and reconnect with family, access high-quality treatment and begin on a path toward recovery. In addition to the residence, Melissa's Institute will will be a base for advocacy, a source of education and provider of unbiased information. The need for an initiative such as this has never been greater. 1 in 4 adults will suffer with mental illness at some point in their lives. in the last 4 years states cumulatively cut more than $1.8 billion dollars from their budgets for services for children and adults living with mental illness. The need for better programs to assist the mentally ill and more of them is critical. In addition, understanding mental illness and dealing with the stigma it entails is important as well. Melissa's House is committed to ensuring the voice of those battling with this disease is heard.
