BENEFITING: CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Oct 07, 2012
As most of you probably already know, I have been training for the Chicago Marathon on October 7th. I would like to use this as an opportunity to raise money for a cause that is very close to my heart. When I was in elementary school we were asked to write one page describing what we would do if we had one wish. Even as a kid, it was an easy question for me to answer: I wanted a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.
In 1994, my cousin, Erin, was diagnosed with CF soon after her birth. In November of 1996, her sister, Colleen, was born and immediately diagnosed with CF.
Both girls continue to require numerous daily medications, chest physical therapy two times per day, and four nebulizer treatments per day. Each day, Erin is required to take about 50 pills and Colleen just over 40 pills. They will continue all of these treatments for the rest of their lives. Erin and Colleen’s bravery continues to be an inspiration to our entire family and community.
CF is a genetic disorder that causes the accumulation of thick mucus in the lungs and around the pancreas, causing suffocation and infection. It is fatal and there is no cure. It has been many years since I first made that wish, and although over the past several years, the progress that has been made toward finding a cure and treating the disorder have been amazing, we are still without a cure. We believe that the cure we are seeking is close, but we must continue to fund the research, which has already brought us this far.
While training for this marathon has been a great experience for me personally, it has also been the most difficult physical challenge of my life. However, if running this marathon enables me to raise money for Team CF and support the research efforts to find a cure, I would do it a million times over.
My cousins are two of the greatest girls in the world and I love them so much. This cause is extremely close to my heart and I want to thank you all so much for your love and support!
All of the money raised will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!
