THE STORY:

Project Purple is a non-profit organization, created with the goal of raising awareness and funding to help defeat pancreatic cancer. Its primary objective is to support patients and families who have been directly affected by this disease.

Pancreatic cancer is the 4th largest killer of all cancer killers and the least funded of the top 10 cancers.  It is the only cancer in the top 10 killers with a single digit survival rate.  94% of people will die within 5 years of being diagnosed.  There are currently NO early detection methods.

We are running in honor of Gary's mom (Melissa's mother-in-law) Sandy.  Sandy is 65, and was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer right before Thanksgiving, this past November 2014.  She had not been feeling quite her self for a few months.  By the time they found the cancer, it was already stage 4, and incurable.  Sandy is now receiving hospice care in her home in Alaska.  To be honest, our family is still in shock that this is happening.  When we found out that the Lincoln Marathon was partnering with Project Purple this year, we saw it as a message from God that we were to be a part of this team.  It is a helpless feeling to see your loved one suffer.  We want to be able to do our part in helping find a cure for this terrible disease.

Our goal as a team is to raise $1000 by April.  We would love it if you would consider donating to this cause which is so close to our hearts right now.

We are making a donation to Project Purple in memory of a dear friends dad, who passed away from Pancreatic Cancer last week. Shelly Lovell's dad died only weeks after getting his diagnosis. We hope our contribution, in his honor, will help get us one step closer to some early detections for Pancreatic Cancer. RIP Jerry Schlekeway. 2 years ago
