Organized by: Angel Tran
Hello! My name is Angel and I’m a college student majoring in Psychology and Neuroscience. You may be wondering “why in the world would a girl like her study such subjects in combination?” Well, starting at the complicated age of growth and change, I came through with depression and anxiety which I have been suffering for years. I wanted to find a cure, a way to study myself in order to find answers to cultural specific problems of understanding mental disorders. In which, I had went for help through my school counselors, seek for professional help but could find very little help to any understanding of my personal issues regarding about cultural high expectations and the way in which I was revolved and developed in such cultural surroundings. I certainly wanted to investigate these conflicts and matters to not only find a resolution to my problems but out of pure concern of other cultures who deem that mental disorders as a taboo or a joking matter of subject. This major not only touch me personally but also to those who are in need of attention of aid and not finding the route of suicide as the only answer to cure this unfortunate issue that could’ve been easily prevented with appropriate care. Honestly, I wanted to raise this campaign all in all to help me reach my goal of succeeding my trip to England to discuss to professors there and to excel in this project I had in mind about helping those in need of mental care. I want to enhance my knowledge in finding ways to approach this complicated issue for those who are in need of mental aid. Though, this Cultural Mental Health Awareness Project was going to start back in March of 2015 this year. It came to an abrupt halt due to my own personal mental health matters, I fell through major anxiety and depression complication that I had to find treatment in two different hospital with a couple day stays there to find get treated myself. In which, a majority of my savings for this trip all went to paying for my medical bills but I am currently building back myself not only mentally but also with high motivation that I will fight for such an important project to come true. I am currently working two jobs to make up the funding for this trip while attending school as well. I work part time as a waitress at a café and also part-time as a grocery store associates while spending my mornings studying and after my job studying all the way through the late night. The plan is to set aside some money to fund for two different things going on, a campaign to help spread awareness of Cultural Mental Health and to help me get the trip to England for the meetings with university professors associated with mental health research to further my knowledge on the other side of the world as well. I want to collect more information for personal research and more for this project. Let's Spread the Awareness of Cultural Mental Health and Investigate the World of Mental Health Together!
