EVENT: Walk for Hope 2015

EVENT DATE: Aug 16, 2015

Meredith Balderrama

On July 27th, 2011, our family lost a beautiful soul. Maria Bickel was many things - a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, artiste, fashionista, Scattergories champion, and Halloween connoisseur. But perhaps the role that brought her the most pride and joy was that of an animal advocate. Her warm heart drove her to care for, aid, and rescue animals of all kinds. So in honor of her memory and her caring soul, we walk to raise money in hopes of saving lives.

Join hundreds for a 5K Walk/Run on the beautiful wooded campus of Northwood University in Midland, Michigan.  All funds raised are used in the Great Lakes Bay Region to host special events, trainings, and provide education in an effort to build awareness of mental health and suicide prevention, intervention and aftercare.

Our Walk for Hope is an opportunity to come together with others who believe in this cause.  It is our hope that this event will de-stigmatize suicide and encourage those who are struggling with mental health or other life challenges to seek out help from those who can support their needs.

Every 12.8 minutes someone dies by suicide in the United States.  In 2013 there were 41,149 people who died by suicide in the U.S.(CDC)  Of those in 2012, 1,295 family and friends were from right here in Michigan.  Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the United States (43.7 million or 18.6%) experiences mental ilness in a given year (NAMI). Less than one-third of adults and one-half of children with diagnosable mental health disorders receive mental health services in a given year.  (SAMHSA)

Whether you knew Maria and feel compelled to donate in honor of her memory, or are just an animal lover like she was and want to have a part in their care, from myself and my family and Maria - thank you.
