Why are we running? For Ken! Because he changed the world, and it's time to give back.
“Ken Merrell is a shining example of what a university professor should be. His scholarship in the area of social skill and strengths-based instruction is one of the most sound, scholarly, and enduring research programs in the country and has resulted in numerous publications for Ken, his colleagues, and his students. His greatest accomplishments, however, relate to his role as a teacher and mentor. There is no one— no one—better at supporting students through classes, research projects, graduate school, and into leadership positions in school systems and universities. His impact on young scholars is profound and serves as a model for all in academia.” ~ Michael Bullis, Dean, University of Oregon College of Education, speaking on behalf of Dr. Kenneth W. Merrell
In August, 2011, we lost an academic adviser, colleague, and friend in Dr. Kenneth W. Merrell, who passed away after a brave and candid struggle with cancer. Ken always put the needs of others in front of himself, and the Kenneth W. Merrell Legacy Scholarship is no exception. The Merrell Legacy Scholarship aims to provide annual support to outstanding graduate students who demonstrate strong promise for leadership and service in school psychology.
It is with mixed emotions that the scholarship committee and University of Oregon College of Education moves forward to make Ken’s dream a reality. We are compelled by both a short- and a long-term fundraising goal, the first of which we already attained. In summer 2012, we realized our first milestone of raising $25,000 to endow the scholarship fund. An endowment of funds ensures that the scholarship can endure at the UO in perpetuity. Our ultimate goal is to raise at least $100,000 by 2016 so that the scholarship will provide a significant annual gift to at least one student. Ken had hoped that each gift would amount to a minimum of $2000, in today’s dollars.
A small group of UO College of Education faculty, staff, students, as well as friends of Ken gathered together to run the Eugene Marathon in the spring of 2011 in support of the American Cancer Society, while Ken was still with us. The Merrell Scholarship Eugene Marathon Race Team aims to provide continued support to Ken, the UO College of Education, and the field of School Psychology by running in his memory this year (2013) and every year until our goal is reached.
As with any race, the first step is the most important, but no step is too small. If you are able to support this Run for Ken, if you are a School Psychologist, a supporter of Education, or if Ken was a meaningful part of your life, please consider making a donation to the scholarship in support of our team.
