THE STORY:

The Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force saves lives by eliminating health inequities in the detection and treatment of breast cancer throughout the Chicago area and its surrounding communities.

Many women are not able to get care or don’t get the best quality of care, based on where they live, the type of insurance they have, how much money they earn and their race.  These inequalities mean that women of color and poor women are more likely to die from breast cancer.  This is unacceptable.  Every woman should have the same access to high quality care.

The Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force leaves no stone unturned, working collaboratively with our community to ensure that every woman has an equal chance at life when it comes to breast cancer.

Your commitment and donation will help to end health inequities and support:

  • Advocacy to prevent massive cuts to breast cancer screening program and elimination of Illinois' breast cancer treatment program.
  • Improvement in the quality of care delivered in hospitals and clinics for all women.
  • Community education to raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer screenings and what constitutes high quality breast care.
  • Navigation to free mammograms for uninsured women and help scheduling mammograms for all women, especially publicly insured women, along with  assistance in accessing high quality diagnostics and treatment at comprehensive breast centers when needed.

About the Task Force
In 2008, a report was released showing that African American women in Chicago were dying from breast cancer at a rate 62% higher than White women.   Over 100 community and healthcare partners came together and determined that a systemic lack of access to quality screening and treatment for women of color women was a significant driver of the disparity.  Thus the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, a separate 501(c)(3) coalition of multiple health care and community partners, was formed to tackle health inequity in all of its forms.

Task Force initiatives and programs are designed to address systemic barriers to care and reduce the racial, ethnic, and class disparity in breast cancer death rates in Metropolitan Chicago. Today, the Task Force and our partners are able to show that health inequities have decreased by 35% -- but this is not enough, and we will not stop until every woman has an equal chance at survival.

By supporting the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force, you can make a difference.  For more information, please visit our website at www.chicagobreastcancer.org.
