Mattress Firm Foundation and Austin-based Nulo pet food have joined forces in an effort to raise funds and awareness for pancreatic cancer. Over 60 million US households own pets and over two-thirds treat their pet as a member of the family. Numerous studies have shown the positive impact pet ownership can have including reduced stress, lower chance of heart disease and lower cholesterol. What many people don’t realize is that dogs and cats get cancer at the same rate as humans. One of the best ways to decrease the risk of cancer in both pets and their owners is through proper nutrition.
“Nulo supports causes that raise awareness about the warning signs of cancer, as well as those that have an opportunity to educate the public about ways to minimize the risk of cancer,” said Michael Landa, CEO and co-founder of Nulo. “Pets have an amazing therapeutic impact on their owners especially those with illnesses. This is why it’s important to provide them with fresh, naturally-preserved food products to help ensure they’ll be by our sides for years to come.”
Pancreatic Cancer has long been the underdog when it comes to funding, research and general awareness. Only 2% of the National Cancer Institute’s funding is designated for pancreatic cancer yet the survival rate is a mere 6%. Great strides are being made, but a great deal still needs to be done to raise awareness and funds for research such as identifying the proteins dogs can smell that indicate cancer in humans.
“We recently toured the TGen’s research facility, which supports the globalCure initiative, in Phoenix and learned that dogs can actually smell and detect cancer in their owners,” said Karrie Forbes, vice president of marketing for Mattress Firm. “This discovery can play a huge role in identifying early detection options for cancer underdogs like pancreatic cancer.”
Canine owners can make a donation of $28 for a chance to win a year’s supply of Nulo dog food and Feline owners can make a donation of $27 for a chance to win a year’s supply of Nulo cat food. All donations are directly used to fund clinical trials and research for pancreatic cancer by globalCure.
