Mattress Firm Foundation has made the fight against pancreatic cancer it's national focus. Long known as the underdog in the cancer world, little funding, awareness and research are focused on pancreatic cancer.
In fact, the National Cancer Institute only provides 2% of its funding to pancreatic cancer. What do you know about pancreatic cancer aside from Steve Jobs' recent passing?
- In 40 years, the survival rate has only increased from 3% to 6%. In fact, the average life expectancy after diagnosis is only three to six months.
- Twenty years ago, breast cancer was considered a death sentence. Through funding, research and awareness, the five year survival rate is now over 98%. We believe the same breakthroughs can happen with pancreatic cancer and there will be a cure in our lifetime.
- It is estimated that 44,030 men and women (22,050 men and 21,980 women) will be diagnosed with and 37,660 men and women will die of cancer of the pancreas in 2011
- Sadly, this number is expected to more than double in less than 20 years.
Instead of accepting a diagnosis with pancreatic cancer as a death sentence, we are working hard to raise awareness and funding for clinical trials and research. Our goal is providing patients and their loved ones with hope. Because there are options, there are success stories, and with each dollar raised we get one step closer to a cure.
Dream it's Possible.
