EVENT: Marine Corps Marathon 2015
On October 25th, 2015, I will be running the 40th annual Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, VA. I am proud to be running with the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes charity team.
Massachusetts Fallen Heroes’ mission is to inaugurate a permanent memorial dedicated to the men and women of Massachusetts who have lost their lives while fighting the Global War on Terrorism since 2001, and to provide a multitude of advocacy services to Veterans and families of the fallen.
When I began training for my first half marathon in 2010, my Dad was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. At that time he had been in the Navy for 18 years and was very proud of his role in the Global War on Terror. Throughout his deployment, I kept him updated on my training and he was thrilled that I had taken up running. I continued running off and on after my first race and ran the Marine Corps Marathon in October of 2012 which was an amazing experience. My Dad was unable to come to DC to watch me finish, but tracked me from home. A few months after the marathon, he was diagnosed with cancer. He told me that he regretted not being able to see me finish a race and that if I ran the Marine Corps Marathon again, he would be there to cheer me on. Shortly after that conversation, his cancer started to progress rapidly and he passed away just 2 months later.
I decided that running this marathon again is a goal that I want to accomplish and joining the Massachusetts Fallen Heroes team is the perfect fit. My Dad made it home safely from Afghanistan, but so many others did not. We have a duty to memorialize our fallen heroes and help care for their families as well as the veterans who served beside them. This is something that my Dad was very passionate about, especially being a veteran himself. Please consider a donation to Massachusetts Fallen Heroes. No amount is too small and any donation would be greatly appreciated.
On October 25th, I will be running in honor of my Dad and all those who have fought for our freedom.
