On April 20, 2015 I will be running in my fifth marathon and my fourth consecutive Boston Marathon to benefit the Melanoma Foundation of New England. This will be my fourth year running with the Running for Cover team. If you would have said to me three years ago that I would have completed four marathons in the past three years I would have said no way, however after being asked to run the 2012 Boston Marathon for the MFNE by Jenn’s cousin, Amy Walls who lost her husband Bill to melanoma over nine years ago, I thought what a great opportunity to raise awareness of melanoma. I am running the 2015 Boston Marathon in support of my brother, Chris Burkart, who was diagnosed with melanoma over three years ago and is currently undergoing treatment. I am also running in honor Bill Walls, who lost his courageous battle with melanoma over nine years ago. I can’t think of a better way to honor their strength, will and spirit while supporting such a great organization.
The MFNE is a non-profit organization that (1) educates the public on the importance of early detection and prevention of melanoma, the mostly deadly form of skin cancer, and (2) provides support groups and advocacy for melanoma patients. All funds raised will be used to continue to educate and provide support for those impacted by melanoma. As a team last year we raised over $450,000 to help support the foundation.
I would be grateful if you would consider supporting me in my goal of raising $10,000 for the MFNE. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. Not only will it help me preserve along the marathon route, but it will also help increase local melanoma awareness and prevention strategies.

The Melanoma Foundation of New England's mission is to reduce the incidents of melanoma in the New England region through education, prevention and support. MFNE hosts a range of educational programs to spread awareness. These programs include Your Skin Is In, a program teaching high school and college students the dangers of tanning, and The Skinny on Skin, which teaches beauty professionals to recognize potential melanomas on the head, neck and scalp of their clients.
Team Running for Cover is running the 2015 Boston Marathon to raise funds to support MFNE's mission. All funds raised will be used to fund and expand these educational programs throughout the New England Area.
