EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
No matter who we are, we all have dreams and goals. Two that I have been working towards are #1-to run a marathon in all 50 states, and #2 -to run the Boston Marathon as my marathon in Massachusetts. As I travel the United States for my marathons, I meet people at each race who share their stories, telling me what led them to where they are, and about taking that step to run their first, fifth, or one hundredth marathon. Their stories are inspiring and all bring forth a common bond shared between not only runners, but all human beings; to be better than who we are today, to dream big and to live life to the fullest.
Recently I ran the Chicago Marathon, and I met another runner working towards the goal of completing a marathon in all 50 states. He told me that not only did he want to succeed with that goal, but he also wanted to raise money during his races to help support causes he believes in. That got me thinking...how can I continue on my journey of seeing all 50 states (26.2 miles at a time), all while helping others?
Then I came to a revelation. I needed to stop trying to qualify for Boston based on time, and instead run Boston by helping others. I am so excited to not only be given the opportunity to live a dream of mine, but I get to do it while supporting a great cause that hits close to home. My grandmother passed away from melanoma when I was a child. Since my early 20s I have been closely monitored for melanoma, and have had a number of suspicious moles removed. I feel melanoma is a cancer that doesn't get much attention; however, early detection and prevention are so important. I know I have been extremely fortunate to join the 2017 Team Running for Cover.
Boston will be my 19th state in my journey, and with your support, not only are you allowing me to live one of my dreams in life, but you are helping to make a difference in someone else’s life too…and perhaps even saving a life.
The Melanoma Foundation of New England's mission is to reduce the incidents of melanoma through education, prevention and support. MFNE hosts a range of educational programs to spread awareness. These programs include Your Skin Is In, a program teaching high school and college students the importance of protecting their skin and dangers of tanning; The Skinny On Skin, educating beauty professionals to recognize potential melanomas on the head, neck and scalp of their clients; and Practice Safe Skin Sunscreen providing free sunscreen to communities for their beaches, parks, sports fields and more. MFNE also offers support for patients and their caregivers through support groups and its one-on-one Billy's Buddies program. All programs are free!
Team Running for Cover is running the 2017 Boston Marathon to raise awareness about the importance of protecting your skin and all funds raised support MFNE's mission. Thank you for your help!
