EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
I am 41, overweight, and have never run more than 7 miles in one go.
But on April 17, 2016, one of the most important people in my life died of Cancer. And on that day, I committed, on the one year anniversary of his death, to run the Boston Marathon in his honor. I will be honored to be running the marathon with his daughter Colleen Barry.
My uncle Kevin Barry was a mountain of a personality and one of the people that always made every place a better place filled with laughs and fun. He was diagnosed with skin Cancer in May 2015, but later that summer we thought he had beat it. Sadly on March 18th, we found out the Cancer had come back, and in less than a month he was gone.
In the last 6 months, I've lost 25 pounds and am up to 10 miles at a clip. The mileage and monetary committment are immense, but I assure you I will meet the mileage; I just need your support to hit my fundraising goal.
April 17th, 2017 will be one of the hardest days in the life of everyone who loved Kevin. You may not have known him, but if you're lucky, you have people like him in your family. The ones that the extended family revolves around. The one that everyone turns to for advice and help, and who never says no. The one that you you look forward to seeing every time you are lucky to see them.
Please help me support the Melanoma foundation in honor of him and his family. When you donate, please send me a note about someone in your life that you've lost or had affected by Cancer and a song or two that makes you think of them. I need 6 hours of music to keep me motivated, and running in solitude has really brought me closer to Kevin. I want to think about your loved ones as well.
