BENEFITING: IMPACT Melanoma
ORGANIZER: IMPACT Melanoma
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
It's the number of miles that make a marathon and the number of years that my aunt, Dianne Quinn, had been the biggest supporter in my life. Dianne gracefully and peacefully lost her battle with Melanoma on April 24, 2015. She left behind a devoted husband and two young sons. She was forty four years young. She never smoked, visited tanning booths, or asked “why me?”. Instead, she looked at cancer and said "try me."
Dianne’s positive outlook on life, even in the midst of her battle with cancer, has become an inspiration in my life. Last year, through her memory, I ran the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Copley Square and raised nearly $10,000 for the Melanoma Foundation of New England.
My favorite memory from race day came from a complete stranger at Mile 24. A man had been running in front of me for a while with "Cancer will not stop me" handwritten on the back of his singlet. I caught up to him, and he tapped me on the shoulder:
"Thank you for running for my cause. I have melanoma in my organs, in my lymph nodes. I was diagnosed last year after I qualified for Boston."
This was enough to push me to the finish line, and encourage me to return again for 2017.
Please help in raising funds to support the Melanoma Foundation of New England’s mission of education, prevention, and support in memory of Di and all those who fight cancer.
When you donate, please include a comment sharing how Melanoma or cancer has affected you or a person you love.
MFNE hosts a range of educational programs to spread awareness. These programs include Your Skin Is In, a program teaching high school and college students the importance of protecting their skin and dangers of tanning; The Skinny On Skin, educating beauty professionals to recognize potential melanomas on the head, neck and scalp of their clients; and Practice Safe Skin Sunscreen providing free sunscreen to communities for their beaches, parks, sports fields and more. MFNE also offers support for patients and their caregivers through support groups and its one-on-one Billy's Buddies program. All programs are free!
Team Running for Cover is running the 2017 Boston Marathon to raise awareness about the importance of protecting your skin and funds to support MFNE's mission. Thank you for your help!
