BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
EVENT DATE: Apr 21, 2014
No one is going to struggle through the Marathon this year more than those personally victimized by last year's tragedy and their families. Those of us who ran last year and are doing it again will have them on our minds as we train and run those 26.2 miles this April, especially as we make that turn onto Boylston.
But many of us will have other heroic people on our mind as we run, as well. For me, it will be my little friend Olivia, who will be six in June. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2010 and has waged an incredible fight. She served as a tremendous motivation when things got tough, whether it is training through the brutal winter or heading up Heartbreak Hill. I am happy to say Olivia has been cancer-free since October 2012.
This will be my third year running for Olivia and the great people – young patients, doctors, nurses, staff – associated with the pediatric hematology-oncology program at Mass General Hospital for Children. Thank you in advance for your support. I truly appreciate it.
Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock Financial, the Mass General Marathon Team has raised nearly $9 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at Mass General Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
