MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL wrote -Thanks to the Boston Athletic Association, Massachusetts General Hospital received 40 entries into the 2014 Boston Marathon in recognition of our staff’s work following the tragic events at the 2013 marathon.
Mass General is honored to have contributed to the healing of the victims of the marathon bombings, their families and our community. We remain extremely proud of the compassion, diligence and professionalism our exceptional caregivers demonstrated.
The enormity of the marathon bombing tested their skills and resilience. The future of dozens of badly wounded patients and their traumatized families were in their hands. Moreover, this attack occurred at one of Boston’s most storied events. The caregivers themselves were shaken. Some struggled to save lives that afternoon fearing that the next patient who came through the doors might be someone they knew.
Of the 39 victims treated at Mass General, the most gravely wounded suffered from traumatic amputations, severe blood loss and third-degree burns.
In the tragedy’s wake, we began to raise funds to support the MGH Emergency Response Fund. It provides social services for victims and families of disasters, as well as emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness training.
