BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014
I’m running for Mass General and in memory of my mom, Eileen, who passed away December 20, 2012.
My mom absolutely loved the Boston Marathon and embodied the lively spirit of Marathon Monday – community, charity, the outdoors... the start of April vacation week! She was a teacher and was always up for heading into town to meet family and friends and follow the ebb and flow of wherever the day took you. In 2008, when I last ran, my mom was there to greet me near the finish line – along with my friend Megan Duff, for whom I was running then and whom I hold close to my heart this year as Megan is now battling breast cancer. In 2008, my mom and Megan stood not far from the site of the second bombing in 2013, where first responders rushed to the aid of two of Megan’s cousins.
Mass General holds a very special place in my family’s heart. We’ve been donating to cancer research at MGH for 20 years now through our annual family golf tournament. But in 2012, it was my mom receiving cancer treatment at Mass General, and the MGH staff was a bright point during an otherwise terrible time. Our family and friends held a large rally below her hospital room on Ebersol Field, forming a giant human heart, and MGH has continued to recognize this display of heart time and time again.
Our collective heart broke last year as the details of Marathon Monday’s tragedy rolled in, and I like thousands of other Bostonians pledged that I would run again, in the spirit of resiliency, and in the spirit of my mom.
Mass General is honored to have contributed to the healing of the victims of the marathon bombings, their families and our community. In the tragedy’s wake, we began to raise funds to support the MGH Emergency Response Fund. It provides social services for victims and families of disasters, as well as emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness training.
