BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
ORGANIZER: MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL
EVENT: 2017 Boston Marathon
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
I will run Boston this year in honor of our friend Prem Tirilok, who passed away in June 2016 from complications related to colon cancer. Prem received excellent care at Mass General during his valiant struggle with cancer. Like me, Prem worked in the technology field, most recently at Brightcove, a pioneer in the online video platform space in Boston. I remember him as a kind, thoughtful, brilliant, but humble person. Although he valued his professional accomplishments highly, he reserved his highest esteem for his family and friends. The courage and strength that Prem demonstrated in his life is a source of personal inspiration to give something back to the hospital and doctors who cared for him so well.
The MGH team I am running with specifically benefits the Emergency Response Team at Mass General. Following the tragedy of the 2013 marathon bombings, Mass General was fortunate to receive 40 guaranteed entries from the Boston Athletic Association to create an Emergency Response Marathon Team. The funds raised provide critical support for emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness training at Mass General, efforts that benefit victims worldwide. Marathon funds raised by this team support the training and resources needed to develop a carefully, integrated response that spans multiple departments throughout the hospital.
As you may know, the Boston Marathon is always held on Patriots’ Day, the third Monday in April. The Boston Marathon began in 1897 and is the world's oldest annual marathon. Approximately 30,000 runners participate each year, of which roughly 2,500 run for charities. The marathon currently allocates spots to two dozen charities who in turn are expected to raise more than $10 million a year, providing important support for organizations like Mass General Hospital, The Melanoma Foundation of New England, Boston Children’s Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute and many others.
Thank you for your consideration of supporting me in my efforts to raise funds for Mass General and to train for this great race.
