Marybeth McCarthy McCarthy Caldwell

THE STORY:

For those of you who don't know me, here is my story :

My name is Marybeth McCarthy Caldwell, and I’m a Registered Nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. I've been working in MGH's Emergency Departmeny for the past three years, and prior to that, I worked on White 6 , MGH's Orthopedic floor , for six years

I am thrilled to announce that I will be running the Boston Marathon on the MGH emergency response team – supporting a cause I feel personally connected to and very passionately about.

It all started on April 15th 2013 @ 2:49pm, I had just finished the 117th Boston Marathon when the first bomb went off.  Feelings of uneasiness and confusion quickly permeated the air; & the sound of sirens rang through the streets w/volume & magnitude unimaginable to me prior. My mind was racing, but the fear was absolutely paralyzing. Just as I will never forget the elation I felt after crossing the finish line, I will never forget the crippling fear that followed it.

I was lucky, physically uninjured as a result of the brutal acts of terror, but more than 250 others were not as lucky. I recognize how absolutely critical it was that the many injured citizens that day were able to rely on a solid team of people who did not freeze in the face of fear. Those hurt were able to count on the collaboration of local hospitals & personell from city, state & federal organizations who had practiced and prepared for situations JUST like that one.

On April 15th 2013, as fear invaded the city of Boston, there were people who were prepared; people who knew what to do. They did not hesitate or freeze in the face of fear, as I had that day. As a result, they were able to triage proficiently, limit suffering, save limbs, & save lives.

I want to run the 2017 Boston Marathon in support of Mass General’s Emergency Response team because I truly recognize its value and imminent need. I want to help the organization continue to grow & strengthen by education, practice, & research, to prepare for whichever disaster is thrown our way. Additionally, I will finally get the opportunity to take a proactive stance against the fear that consumed me in 2013- and prove that it will NEVER stop me from running.

Donations of any amount, even just $1.00, would mean the world to me and would be benefiting a truly important and valuable cause. Thank you all for your support. I cannot wait to run on Monday April 17h.

ASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL wrote -

Following the tragedy of the 2013 marathon bombings, Mass General was fortunate to receive 40 guaranteed entries from the Boston Athletic Association to create an Emergency Response Marathon Team.  For the third year, thanks to John Hancock, Mass General will have 40 spots for runners on the Emergency Response Marathon Team. The funds raised provide critical support for emergency care, disaster relief and disaster preparedness teaching and training at Mass General, efforts that benefit victims worldwide.

Team runners raise money to ensure that Mass General is ready for the next disaster – man-made or natural. Marathon funds support the training and resources needed to develop a carefully, integrated response that spans multiple departments throughout the hospital. “There’s no room for error,” says David Brown, MD, chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mass General. “Our performance must be flawless. As in football, if one player of the 11 on the field doesn’t do the job, the play fails.”

At Mass General, we take emergency planning very seriously. Preparing for the next disaster takes much training and practice. And donors are critical to our success. Time spent training is not covered by insurance and often takes place outside work hours. Money raised by the Mass General Emergency Response team allows Mass General to ready at a moment’s notice.
