A LITTLE OF MY STORY....
As many of you probably know, I have never been a distance runner. But I love running and over the last several years have committed to doing more 5Ks with Mike and the kids. My goal ever since 1995 has been to run the Boston Marathon before I’m 50, and after my last birthday (#46) and my last year (cancer treatment and the loss of Sue, my dear sister-in-law), I realized that the time is now.
Thanks to Mira and Keith, all of my treatment was through Mass General. What a gift. Not only did my cancer team (Barb, Bev, and Rachel -- goddesses all!) blow me away with their care and compassion, but so did the interventional radiology team, proton therapists, nursing staff, OR teams, and even orderlies. MGH may be known for its amazing clinical skill, but combined with this compassion it is what every hospital should aspire to be.
As I went through proton radiation with my three wonderful new friends (Nive, Sandy, and Tina), we regularly saw children there for treatment. There was no doubt, as we sat there fatigued, still a little sick, sore, burnt, and bald, that we were the incredibly lucky ones. We would have it be us rather than our children any day.
So I see this marathon as an opportunity to take my mental and physical strength and do something that’s a little bit selfish – just me, my sneakers, some warm clothes, good tunes, and the road – but also a little bit good. Being able to combine my selfishness with raising money for the most amazing caregivers in the world (staff at Mass General) who are caring for children with this icky diagnosis feels like the least I can do to give back. Thanks for your support!!!
THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS CHARITY from MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL:
Since 1998, with the partnership of John Hancock, the Mass General Marathon Team Fighting Kids’ Cancer, One Step at a Time has raised over $12 million to support the pediatric hematology-oncology program at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients.
Thanks in large part to the philanthropic dollars raised by this Marathon Team, MGHfC is advancing cutting-edge research, increasing the number of clinical studies to improve cure rates, and providing the best treatment possible to pediatric cancer patients. MGHfC is also focused on the quality of life of its young patients and their families through the child life program, which utilizes therapeutic play - music and art therapy to help pediatric cancer patients and their families cope emotionally and developmentally with their illnesses.
This year, more patients than ever before utilized Child-Life services, which indicates the growing popularity of the programming, the recognition of its importance, and the program’s ability to continue to expand its offerings.
We are grateful for the hard work of all of our runners and the dedication of their family and friends, as they embark on fundraising and training for the historic 26.2 mile race.
