I am running in honor of Gia! She is a warrior. Please read a story from Gia's mom, Sabrina about Gia, and how they found out their little warrior was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Gia was a healthy baby from birth until she was 15 months old. At that time, she developed an ear infection. A week later, she came down with the same symptoms and I was told it was virus. This happened for another month every 7-10 days. I kept being told it was a virus. Gia then developed additional symptoms which lead the doctors to believe she had a bone infection. We were admitted to the hospital where a bone marrow test was done in her clavicle and this was when we found out there was a malignancy but we still didn't know what kind of cancer it was. We were then transferred to MGH where they already believed Gia had a form of Lymphoma. She was quickly diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and began intense chemotherapy treatments immediately. We were in the hospital for another two weeks and then were able to come home. Gia has since gone through 10 months of intense treatment and she has another almost two years of treatment. She has been through periods of time where she has stopped walking, stopped eating, gained an enormous amount of weight and lost all her hair. She has had 3 surgeries due to problems with her port and countless lumbar punctures. She's been put under anesthesia so many times I have sadly lost count.
With all she has been through, she is still the same fiery little girl with a strong will. She has been blessed with a fierce and keen sense to fight. She's our warrior.
