EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
Thank you for visiting my marathon fundraising page. This will be my 5th Boston and once again i am incredibly excited to be running this year for such a worthy cause . I am running to raise funds for the Mass General Hospital Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Clinic. My family story is below and I will be updating it between now and Marathon Monday. I thank you all in advance for your support of a wonderful cause.
<!--EndFragment-->My cousin, Liam Talbot is now 19 years old, he has very complex medical problems including: chronic arsenic poisoning, Crohn's disease, severe dysautonomia, cardiovascular problems, immunocompromised, and severe small fiber polyneuropathy affecting his entire autonomic system. Liam has been receiving IVIG every three weeks since he was 7 years old at MGH Pediatric Hematology/Oncology clinic. He has 16 MGH doctors who are on his medical team to help improve his quality of life, he has been a patient at MGH since he was a baby. The staff at MGH have become part of Liam's family and support system. They work very hard to improve Liam's quality of life and also help to preserve the huge smile that is engraved on Liam's face on a daily basis. Although his medical problems have become more complicated, Liam continues to become stronger emotionally throughout each medical obstacle that comes along his path. Liam struggles everyday to do very simple tasks that most people his age do without any effort. Unfortunately, his health has been deteriorating and he has been on daily IV fluids to help stabilize his cardiovascular system. Despite his daily medical battles, Liam continues to strive to work toward his life goal of becoming a child-life specialist, and we are all confident that he will accomplish his goals with his strong drive, determination and positive attitude. More recently Liam has had to start using an electric wheelchair for medium to long distances.
> Liam's health has continued to deteriorate due to small fiber neuropathy. Therefore, once a week, he has a 4 hour treatment of IVIG, he is able to do the treatment at home and self-administer it now! He gets sick with side effects the week of the infusion and has brutal side effects the few days but his mother says he has the most positive perspective of life than anyone she knows. He is always happy, courageous and never gives up fighting to improve his quality of life!! In 2015, Liam met, wrote and recorded a song with musician Gavin DeGraw with the help of the 'Make a Wish' foundation - we hope the song will be released in the near future.
I encourage you to watch the following 2 youtube clips about Liam and his work with Gavin Degraw.
My Cousin, Shane King, now 9, was diagnosed at 6 months old in 2006 with rhabdomyosarcoma and received chemotherapy, surgery and proton radiation at MGH to treat his cancer. Shane's family is grateful for the support that Shane received, not only from the doctors and nurses that treated Shane but also from the child life team, the administrators and staff at the clinic. In November 2012 Shane graduated to the clinic's long term survivor program, marking 5 years of cancer free scans, following completion of his treatment in 2007.
I am also running the marathon in honour & memory of 2 of my cousins. Darragh King. who sadly had Leukemia and passed away on Feb 28 1986, aged 7 Years 9 months , Simone Moore who passed away on December 26th 2015 and my friend David Johnson (aka The Nator) who sadly passed away last year.
