THE STORY:

Mi Escuelita is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and is the fourth largest childcare provider in Dallas. There are only 26 National Association for the Education of Young Children accredited programs in the Dallas area, including Mi Escuelita’s three eligible sites. Last year 75% of the children enrolled in Mi Escuelita were Hispanic, 22% African American and the remaining 3% were of Asian American, Biracial or another ethnicity. The majority of the children that attend Mi Escuelita come from families that are low income and considered to be "at-risk."

Mi Escuelita's Early Childhood Education Program has developed a specialized curriculum designed to meet the needs of low income children whose native language is not English. This scientifically based curriculum provides language intervention along with daily math, science, reading, music and art activities. Mi Escuelita uses the award-winning Scholastic’s Big Day at Pre-K curriculum combined with new practices geared toward second language learners. This curriculum provides our children with a foundation of developmental and educational skills they will need to be successful when they enter the formal educational environment, and will allow them to take full advantage of all educational opportunities so they can succeed academically.

Studies have shown that the ideal age for children to learn a second language is during the first six years of their life, as this is when they experience the greatest gains in their cognitive language development. Children that attend Mi Escuelita are between the ages of 2½ to 5 years old. This is the optimum age for them to become bilingual. Learning a second language during these formative years will improve a child's native language skills, as well as making them predisposed to learning additional languages later in life.

Entering its fifth year, #GivingTuesday has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours, and activities that highlight the good and encourage engagement and support in communities. This year Dallas is hosting a city-wide #GivingTuesday effort to lead Dallas into the holiday season in a spirit of thanksgiving and gratitude—and in so doing, earn for Dallas the title as “the most generous city in the nation” on #GivingTuesday.

This is a campaign to encourage generosity and it will manifest in a lot of different ways.  Generosity can be more than a donation – it could be time, acts of kindness, or even the power of your voice. We will measure generosity as “impACTS” not just donations.

A core planning group has developed a local marketing campaign, and the BigDGives.org platform to track activity and other resources. However, it is ultimately up to companies, non-profit organizations and Dallas citizens to provide the energy needed to achieve campaign success. The national #GivingTuesday team at New York City’s 92nd Street Y has asked United Way of Metropolitan Dallas to coordinate a Dallas campaign.  They plan tohighlight Dallas as one of the most giving cities in national media.

There are many ways to take part, and we hope you will join us in this effort. For more information contact United Way, 214.978.000
