BENEFITING: GLEASONS GIVE A KID A DREAM
EVENT DATE: Nov 16, 2013
Growing up on the mean streets of Baltimore is tough enough as it is. Add in a father who passed away before you were born and a mother who lost a valiant 2 year fight with kidney disease and you have Mia Manuel. At the tender age of thirteen.
Though angry, her mother’s brave bout against kidney failure, something that afforded her two more years of life, was not lost on young Mia. Her survival instincts kicked in at a very early age and with her grandmother’s encouragement she remained strong, striving to reach her full potential.
She considers both women to be heroes and because of how she grew up she’ll always count honing those survival skills as her greatest achievement.
Eventually leaving Baltimore for college and culture in the Big Apple, Mia is now a photographer who calls Brooklyn home. She lives by the motto; ‘hard work pays off’, something she’ll surely use in her training at Gleason’s.
Already someone who finds giving back essential, she’s especially drawn to charitable organizations that strive to improve the lives of children in the inner cities, like Give A Kid A Dream.
Mia’s strength of purpose along with her humility ultimately place her in a league of her own.
