THE LENGTHIER VERSION:
On December 6th I will be traveling to Haiti to work with the organization Midwives for Haiti. This organization is helping train Haitian women and men to become Skilled Birth Attendants along with providing a Mobile Pre-natal Clinic, Maternity Center at Ste. Terese Hospital, a Post-natal Program and a Matron Outreach Program.
Why Haiti? Haiti is the most dangerous country in the western hemisphere to give birth.
How did I choose this program?
My Midwifery interest began to grow in nursing school. I read and watched everything I could get my hands on. The births I was a part of in school became the defining moments of my entire education. I then went on to become a Doula. I am now considering going back to school for a Masters in Nurse-Midwifery. I knew I wanted to travel and experience a midwifery volunteer program that would allow me to really get to the grassroots of a midwifes role (in this case a Traditional Birth Attendant). Somewhere where help was in great need.
I chose Midwives For Haiti first through word of mouth and then through the magic of universal winks and synchronicities that I could not ignore.
Now here I am with this fundraiser.
I wanted mine to be as simple and direct as possible. I wanted people who donated to know exactly how their money was going to be used. So I am setting the goal of $1000. I will be buying the exact items contained in the CDKs that reflect the World Health Organization’s six principles of cleanliness for birth including, (1) clean hands, (2) clean delivery surface, (3) clean perineum, (4) clean cord cutting instrument, (5) clean cord ties, and (6) clean cord care of the newborn baby.
With $1000 I will be able to make 500 kits. With the help of my amazing husband and mother, we will be putting these packs together over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I will then be packing up the kits and hand delivering them to Haiti in early December.
I appreciate you reading this and your donations.
Know you are doing something great!!
