BENEFITING: Saha Global
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2016
My name is Micah Bidwell and I am a student of Environmental Engineering at Georgia Tech. I started studying engineering with the desire to improve the lives of people around the world. And I have found a wonderful opportunity to do that this summer in Ghana! I have just accepted a position as a Field Representative for Saha Global, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women to provide basic services, like water and electricity, for their own communities. My project will focus on providing clean water to a community in Northern Ghana.
The Situation in Ghana
In Ghana, more than 3 million people lack access to clean water. For most of these people, the only sources of water are contaminated with fecal matter and a variety of dangerous parasites. Because of this, diarrheal diseases are the third most common ailment in the country and one-quarter of all deaths in children under 5 are attributed to these diseases.
How Saha Global Works
We partner with rural communities in developing countries in need of clean water. A team of Field Representatives, like myself, travels to the community to work with local women to find the best solution to their unique challenges. Together, we establish sustainable businesses that provide vital water. Not only that, but they also provide vital economic independence. These businesses are owned and operated by women in the communities they serve, and use simple, affordable technologies. The maintenance and operation of these businesses is entirely funded by revenue from the business sales.
Saha Global is committed to the long-term success of these projects. They monitor the past clients, providing information or training if necessary. All of the businesses implemented by Saha to date are currently in operation, providing necessary clean water or electricity to residents and providing a small income for the women who run them. This translates into over 43,000 people, including 8,650 children under 5, who now have clean water.
I Need Your Help
I cannot do this on my own. My project needs your support and contributions to happen. The capital necessary to establish the water business is generated from fundraising activities, like this one. All of your donation will go towards building this business, and, as a direct result, saving the lives of many men, women, and children.
