BENEFITING: Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation
EVENT: T2T Tower Climb 2015
EVENT DATE: May 17, 2015
I am joining The mission of the Stephen Siller Foundation to honor the sacrifice of people like Firefighters Siller, Burke and all who have laid down a life to save others like my own classmate Jim Rice, who fell in the line of duty for the Peabody, MA Fire Dept.
September 11th in my mind will always be first a wedding anniversary of two special people in my life well before it became a hallowed day of mourning. I recall that day in 2001. At first surreal, the horror set in with a flash of relief that the people I knew best were out of harm's way even as we were all affected. I realized as I saw people going about their lives, shopping or sipping sidewalk cafe lattes, how in California we seemed so out of touch with tragedy in DC, PA and NY. Living in San Francisco at the time, I felt lightyears away.
I traveled back shortly thereafter to bear witness. I recall the night the Yankees lost to the Diamondbacks eating pizza with friends at John's of Bleeker Street. As an insufferable Red Sox fan, I kept my thrill muted and still as I watched the epic end to an emotional Series. Seeing all my NYC buds so crestfallen, I wished that the Yankees had won but more so wished something more than a temporary balm for NY.
As you can see from some of my pictures, NY did just fine (including a couple of Super Bowls against my Patriots): my original symbol of sports-inspired hope in that dark time after September 2001.
We are all Yankees, Patriots and true Giants. This life is sometimes a sprint like Billy Burke's, at times a marathon and the only tragedy is if we all were to give in to the darkness.
For all who have come before and will again, to do the work that I choose not to or am not capable of, this is the least I can do in their honor.
