Michael Watts wrote -"Isn't it just for kids that can't afford snowboarding and why would I give my hard-earned cash?" You are asking yourself right this very moment. Let me take you on an answer adventure my friends. TARRENTINO Style - Snowboarding changes people and gives them an identity, freedom, accomplishment, and opens up more paths in life than just having the best time. I was an 8th grader, the first time I snowboarded. I had a bull-cut, bleached tips, wore clogs and corduroys and I wasn't the most popular kid in school. I did not have very many friends, but that was all going to change. There was a posting about the ski bus, and I was beyond excited to participate in an activity that may be the end of me. The day came when I was going to be picked up; I had some jacket, gloves, pants, and goggles that were 2nd hand from the store down the street. I hopped on the bus and saw a few kids that I knew from school, "COOL KIDS," I was beyond nervous. Here I am with these kids, that have been making fun of me for years and now I am 3-hour bus ride with them... UGH! I took my seat and took a quick nap, and before I knew it, I was at Mt. Hood Meadows (We take the Chill youth there). I got my rentals and started my lesson. I don't remember much from the instructor, actually, nothing and when it came time for lunch, I ditched the lesson. The reason being, those cool kids had asked me to ride with them. You thought I was nervous before, I was shaking, literally shaking in my too tight boots. We hopped on one of the largest lifts, which I have never been on, and up we went. Everyone was having a good time, joking and laughing, talking about the cute girl in school. I had no reason to be there, but here I was. It came time to unload the lift... BOOM! Fell, was I embarrassed? Totally! But it was done or die time. I strapped in, and for the first time, I was finally snowboarding. The wind was whipping my face, the sound of the board sliding on the snow, the hooting and hollering from my new compadres. It was euphoric. I was literally and figuratively on top of the world. From that day forward, I wanted nothing more than to experience that majestic feeling. It shaped my career, the people I called friends and showed me that I could do anything and I mean ANYTHING if I just strapped in and pushed. I am asking you to help with my adventure. $5 allows one youth to enjoy this sense of wonderment and freedom for a night; this provides a lift ticket, rental gear, and lessons. $18 provides safe transportation from Athletic Transport Services and includes rentals, lesson, and lift ticket for a night. $30 allows one youth to participate in the six-week program at Mt Hood Meadows $108 gives a youth six nights at Meadows along with safe transportation. $300 You just allowed an agency like New Avenues for Youth or Boys and Girls Club of SW Washington the ability to take a full roster of 10 youth. $1,650 You just filled a bus for six weeks! $3,300 two-nights of programming every week starting in January is full, and it's because of you! $12,300 Transportation and all lift tickets, rentals, lessons are taken care of by you for 110 youth.
